ABOUT THE BANDS:
Eddie Barbash -
Hailed by Jon Batiste as "one of the world’s most important saxophonists," Eddie Barbash was a founding member of the house band for the Late Show With Stephen Colbert and currently tours the world with Cory Wong and the Wongnotes. His unmistakable sound is featured on the Oscar and Grammy-winning soundtrack of Soul. He has performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Madison Square Garden to the Village Vanguard and has headlined both the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and the Umbria Jazz Festival. Barbash's versatile sound has led him to collaborate with musicians in many styles. At 18 he joined the sextet of legendary jazz drummer Chico Hamilton and the quintet of emerging jazz star Jon Batiste. In his 20's he fell in love with American traditional music and began touring with bluegrass phenom Sierra Hull. He's a frequent guest with funk band Vulfpeck and indie rocker Sam Evian. In 2016 he performed a duet on national TV with Yo-Yo Ma and in 2024 he performed the world premier of "Songs Of Nature," a concerto for saxophone and choir by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Paul Moravec.
Eddie has released 4 albums: "For Murray and Lillian", a collection of crooning melodies dedicated to his late grandparents, arranged by Kyle Athayde for an octet of four strings and jazz quartet; "Eddie Barbash Live Parts 1-4", a selection of the best performances of 6 years of leading bands in NYC; and most recently "Live With Jim, Joe, and Dave", a snapshot of one night of improvised music in Brooklyn, recorded directly to tape in one of the borough's hippest local haunts.
Eddie was born in West Islip, NY and was raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, Atlanta, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He lives in Nashville.
Orous -
Ouros infuses deftly crafted musical composition and songwriting with impeccable musicianship. This bilingual band performs songs in both Spanish and English with rich vocal harmonies and sizzling instrumentation. The four band-members, hailing from different parts of the world with influences ranging across four continents, are deeply experienced in multiple genres including flamenco, bluegrass, jazz, Latin, and traditional American and European music.
Ouros features longtime Virginia Folklife Stage stalwart Danny Knicely, a multi-talented multi-instrumentalist from the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. Danny is constantly active performing and recording his own music and collaborating with other musicians and dancers from across the globe. With Ouros, Danny is joined by Bolivian brothers Mario “Cesar” and Jose Oretea on guitars and Ralph Gordon on upright bass. The group performed together in the early 2000s until they disbanded when the Oretea brothers moved to the west coast. Thankfully for us, the brothers have returned to the Washington DC area. Seamlessly picking up where they left off, Ouros carefully knits diverging musical components into a consistent and original sound, weaving a fabric of infectious rhythms and melodic splendor not to be missed.
Tom Mitchell & the Sam Farthing Trio -
Tom Mitchell is a guitar player and singer rooted in the styles of the 1920’s and 30’s jazz, western swing, country blues and old-time music; he’s happily been both sideman and leader for a great variety of musical endeavors. In addition to singing and playing guitar, he’s played mandolin, banjo, tenor guitar or tiple when the need arose.
Ten years of playing with legendary hipster Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks took him around the world and led to the recording of two acclaimed CD’s including“Beatin’ the Heat” which featured guest appearances by Bette Midler, Ricki Lee Jones, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, and Brian Setzer.
Working with Grammy nominated Ann Savoy led to several extended trips to Louisiana and resulted in a great love of the Cajun Prairie and the musicians that abound in that rich cultural stew. His collaboration with Ann Savoy and her Sleepless Knights brought two fine CD’s from Memphis International Records and a movie soundtrack spot including producer credits for the Sony picture “All the Kings Men”.
Tom makes his home in Baltimore where he loves playing with the Blue Rhythm Boys and the Redwine Jazz Trio.
Mike Mitchell Trio
With his effortless vocals, distinctive songwriting, and instrumental prowess, Mike continues to capture audiences and carve out his own place in bluegrass.
Mike Mitchell is a singer/songwriter and fiddler in the contemporary bluegrass style. He is most influenced by 70’s J.D Crowe and The New South, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush.
As a recording artist, Mike has released 3 bluegrass albums, the second of which, “Small Town” debuted on Billboard at # 2.
His latest project, “Fathers & Sons” has enjoyed three #1 hit singles, with the album itself spending 13 months on the Bluegrass Unlimited Top 15 Albums chart. The new track, “Uncommon Man” is beginning its climb onto airplay charts this summer!
